Playing God: World Development
and Other Role Playing STUFF!

Well, it’s been a hectic month so I don’t have anything spectacular for you guys. I will tell you that one little chunk of my world is almost done, and I’ll soon be running a game set in that area. Woohoo! The thing that’s been taking me all this time is the fact that I, with the help of Chris Reid (and some other friends who aren’t CT staff!), have been writing my own rules system.

I must be crazy! But we already knew that!

At some point in time I decided that I might someday want to publish an RPG based on this world, and I didn’t want to try to make my things fit with say, the d20 system. After several years, I finally decided to get off of my duff and get it done, dragging Chris along with me and constantly soliciting the opinions of my talented assistants and future play-testers, Steve and Dylan.. And aside from specific spells and magic resistance and other annoying things like that, it’s almost doooooooone. I’m giddy, can you tell?

So, this month I’d like to steal a page from Chris’s book and present . . .

AJ’s Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Make Your Own System, Too!

  1. It’ll impress all of your gaming friends!

  2. You could be the next d20 system and actually make some money.

  3. Teh Munky told you to... Oh wait, wrong forum.

  4. It’s a better use of your time than watching reality TV.

  5. Since you’ll be staying home, chained to your computer, trying to come up with a combat system, you’ll be saving a fortune on gas!

  6. When you’re really bored, you can take all of your old role playing characters and convert them to your new system. Fun!

  7. You can finally have a use for that annoying 30 sided die.

  8. When writing your game, you can mock any rule in any previous game you’ve ever played as you explain how much better your game is.

  9. And, while you’re at it, you can take every rule you ever liked from every game you ever played and somehow work them into one system, just adding a few original new things here and there to throw people off... Oops, I just gave away my secrets.

And the number one reason why I think you should write your own gaming system is . . .

  10. So you can take over my job, writing a column about world development, and Sheryl won’t nag me every month! Bwuhahahahaha! Just kidding. I mean, you should do it because you can. Isn’t freedom grand?

Bonus reason: You can give your favorite race all the bonuses you always thought they should have, and give nothing to those other, silly, lesser races:D

My apologies for such a short column. Tune in next month when I’ll regale you with tales about play-testing my new game, and/or putting it off and playing Call of Cthulhu and Munchkin instead.
